Library launches media literacy talks

By Reader Staff

The East Bonner County Library District is hosting a three-part series on media literacy beginning this Wednesday.

The first event in the series begins with a discussion of fake news featuring Sandpoint Reader Editor Cameron Rasmusson as a presenter and resource. With false information rampant on the internet, how can consumers distinguish trustworthy reporting from fabricated stories? How do journalists verify their stories and pursue accurate information? What should a person make of fake news accusations from individuals in power? The presentation will cover these questions and more.

The next session, which takes place March 28, features Professor Geoff Carr presenting on ethics in media. The session will explore the limits of free speech and how technology has challenged those limits.

The final session, set for April 25, will cover the future of media literacy.

The first session takes place 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, at the Heartwood Center Grove Room, 615 Oak St. It is free with no pre-registration required. Call Mike Bauer for at 208-265-2665 for more information.
